For
some parents the step back into education may be a daunting prospect
especially for those who may have had negative experiences whilst
they were at school. For others who have been raising young children
at home it may be the lack of confidence that is associated with
isolation that creates a barrier to pursuing further education and
training.
In
an attempt to ease the transition from home to taking up educational
opportunities in the community project workers have been providing
"taster" courses in their bases. The classes have proved
to be successful as many of the parents who attended enrolled in
September at their local college. The "Meet-a-Mum" Association
held a sale at the Martin Center and the funds raised were used
towards the payment of fees for these courses.
In
the words of one parent, "my project worker has given me a
lot of support. She has helped me to get information about getting
back into further
education and I have since enrolled at the local college."
A
"Celebration of Achievement" event
was held for parents and project workers
to mark their successful return to education
